Diva Report for Dec 2, 2005

Dana the Shopping Diva

December 2, 2005

It’s December so it’s time to kick your holiday shopping into high gear.  With that in mind, I’m kicking off today’s shopping report in a big way!

If you are shopping for fur – especially if you are a husband shopping for an amazing gift for your wife, now is the time to check out Geno’s Furs in Norhpark Mall.  They have sales up to 60% off.

Downtown Edmond is advertising that they offer free gift wrapping and plenty of parking, if you are looking for mall alternatives and want more unique shopping opportunities.

Speaking of unique…

Bass Pro Shops – a bit out of the norm for what I normally talk about, but…- it’s a great place for holiday shopping.  They have Turkey Frying and Holiday Cooking sessions on Dec 3, 10, and 17 at noon.  Santa is even on hand for the kiddos.  If you use the new Bass Pro Shops credit card, you get 6 months with NO payments and No interest!

Even tho Kaci is in TX shopping, this one is in her honor.  At Ann Taylor cashmere sweaters are buy one, receive the second at 50% off.  They have many other sales right now as well.

Victoria’s Secret always does Christmas to the max.  On Dec 6, on CBS they are having a Fashion Show.  This is a fashion show that even you two guys will like.  In the mean time, go to their website to get deals on sweaters starting at $19 guaranteed to arrive by Christmas.  For orders over $100 enter offer code GIVE for free shipping.

Kohls is having a 2 day Mega Gift Sale today and Saturday.  Most things are 50-60% off, but Jewelry is 70% off.  Pick up decorations (60% off), flannel sheets (60% off), and toys (30-60% off)!

JC Penney:  Holiday Huge Sale with many things 60% off.  Sat Dec 3rd.  7am to 10pm with door busters from 7am to noon.  4pm to 10pm take 20% off Clearance. Go to their website for coupons for $10 and $15 off.

Foley’s is having a 3 Day Holiday Sale that ends on Saturday.  They have everything from jewelry to shoes to electronics to coats on sale with most things from 25 to 60% off.

Sear’s also has some great deals this weekend.  Take 40-70% off jewelry.  Shoes on sale with many deals around 50% off.  A few weeks ago we talked about chocolate fountains.  They have a small one on sale for a mere $49.99.  Plus, at Sears you can buy things on line and pick them up in the store or have it shipped!

Last, but certainly not least…

I know Drew will be at Quail Springs Mall on Sunday, Dec 4 from 3-9pm.  Come shop and support a local charity.  For a $5 donation, shoppers will receive a coupon book filled with savings throughout the mall wich is nice since the mall already has sales everywhere!

"emotionally bereft sinkhole"

Still Single?

Whether you’re single and loving it or desperately seeking Mr./Ms. Right, being hounded about your relationship status is annoying. And yet it seems to be a perfectly acceptable topic of conversation at festive family functions this time of year. In preparation for holiday party season, we asked everyone from social experts to comedians for the best answers to the “Why are you still single?” question.

Save your ego by boosting your questioner’s

“When children ask a disquieting question, adults answer the question with a question. This technique deflects the attention off of you and puts the spotlight on the questioner, and it may work for you, too. Say ‘What an interesting question. I am curious about how you made your decision to get married to fill in the name of your questioner’s partner.’ This indicates that you think getting married is a decision, showing that being single isn't about being a loser but about not having made that decision yet. And as a perk, it may provide the opportunity for an interesting conversation!”

-Joni Mantell, psychotherapist and relationship coach in New York, NY and Pennington, NJ

Make your point with an extreme example

"Tell them, ’I look at marriage as an old-fashioned, patrician, indentured-slave practice that imprisons people in a backbreaking, emotionally bereft sinkhole.’”

-Mike O’Malley, star of the CBS series Yes, Dear

Bait-and-switch your response

“One all-purpose answer for anything rude is to give a big smile and say, ‘Oh, you!’ They will be baffled by it, so use their confusion to change the subject by saying ‘Now, listen’ in an urgent tone and going off on something else. Just make it clear to yourself that you don't even have to acknowledge something stupid has been said, much less answer it.”

-Ronna Lichtenberg, author of Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succeed

Make them wish they hadn’t asked

“Try, ‘Because the doctor tells me that I get enough nagging from my mom.’ ‘Because a couple of years ago I got a great deal on a 50 pound box of condoms, and I want to get my money’s worth.’ ‘One thing at a time. Let me get the sex change first.’ ‘Have you seen me naked?’”

-Brian McCann, writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien

Inspire jealousy because you’re still single

“The trick is to persuade people that you're not bothered by their nosy question. Turn the undercover insult into an opportunity to impress them with responses that display your confidence, self-empowerment and sense of humor. Some ideas are ‘I’m single because I’m waiting for my perfect match, just like you did,’ ‘It takes time to separate the best from the rest,’ or ‘I’m taking my time to make sure I do it right the first time.’”

-Laurie Puhn, J.D., author of Instant Persuasion: How to Change Your Words to Change Your Life and founder of www.lauriepuhn.com

Shrug it off with a snappy comeback

“My general feeling is that a rude question deserves a rude answer, but a few of my favorite ways to deflect the attention are:

‘It gives my mother something to live for.’

‘Johnny Depp is taken.’

‘Just lucky, I guess.’

‘I guess it just goes to prove that you can’t trust those voodoo-doll rituals.’”

-Linda Sunshine, author of Women Who Date Too Much…And Those Who Should Be So Lucky

Drop some science on the situation

“Defuse the comment by saying that studies have shown that marrying at a later age increases the odds of the marriage lasting. The younger you are, the more likely it is that you’ll grow in different directions. But when you’re older, you’ve got a better idea of who the person is and that they’re going to stay that way.”

-David Givens, Ph.D., anthropologist and author of Love Signals

Smile and move on with savvy

“Don’t flip out if someone hits you with the question. Remember that the holidays are a tense time and people might just be looking for conversation-starters. Try to go into these parties, if you have to go, with a good attitude and respond good-naturedly. ‘Thank you for recognizing how high my standards are,’ or ‘No one has been smart enough to ask me yet’ are good responses. Or just say, ‘That's a good question, I've never thought about it before!’ and walk away with a huge smile on your face.”

-Joyce Newman, media relations/communications expert and founder of The Newman Group

Kimberly Dawn Neumann is a writer and performer in New York City who now intends to respond with “I’m still hoping for a shot at Miss America” the next time anyone questions the lack of a big “rock” on her left hand. She has contributed to Marie Claire, Fitness, and Prevention, among other publications.

The Family of Sgt. Dragus

"32-year-old Sergeant Jonathan Dragus died on Thursday after his police car careened out of control and struck a tree while chasing a stolen motorcycle in northwest Oklahoma City.

The driver of the motorcycle, 22-year-old Kyle Wayne Grider, surrendered to authorities late Thursday.

Grider has been arrested five times by Oklahoma City police, including past charges of using stolen vehicles. He could face charges of second-degree murder, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and attempting to elude police."

Although this happened almost 2 weeks ago, it remains on my mind.  Sgt. Dragus was the son of my neighbors.  He was the father of two, the youngest still an infant.  He also leaves behind a widow still on the police force.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely, Dana

Shopping Diva Report for Oct 21

Dana the Shopping Diva

October 21, 2005

If you are in the OKC Metro, make sure to listen 98.9 KYIS FM today at 5:40 pm!

I’m shakin’ things up today by putting the Department Stores at the end.

The Vault Grand Opening:  Saturday the 22nd thru the 30th.  The Vault located in Edmond OK, is the best new place for Edmond and the greater Oklahoma City area to find the newest and trendiest fashions at the best prices. I stumbled across this place driving to a friend’s house the other day.  I’m SO glad I did.  It has great clothing, an awesome atmosphere, and it’s affordable!  They even have a pool table and live music from time to time.  Located at 2nd and Fretz (near City Bites) in Edmond, the Fountains Shopping Center.  The Vault offers clothing from:

Fcuk, Diesel,  Buffalo,  C&C California, Blue Marlin, Salt Works, Earnest Sewn, Kunna, Free People, Sanctuary, Howe, Junk Food, Bc Collection, Spy, Simply Flawless, Oink, Sacred Blue, Johnny Cotton, 4 You, Bcbg, Mavi, Famous Stars And Straps, Caffeine, Blu Law, Sacred Blue, J And Company, Kenzie, Big Star, American Apperal, Ben Sherman, Dkny, Hudson, Beau & Eros, 575 Denim, Vault, Design History, Dex, True Religion, Abs Jeans, Jedadiah, And More...

Isabella:  After you check out the Vault, stop into Isabella.  They are in the same shopping center.  They offer edgy, trendy, sophisticated fashions including designer jeans, jewelry, handbags, and even shoes!  They are pricier than Vault but still a great shop!  I’ve used there things for photo shoots and have always been impressed with their selection.  While you’re there pick up a trunk tee for 60% off!

Mistletoe Market:  October 21-23.  It’s a whole new look for Mistletoe Market, the Junior League of Oklahoma City’s favorite holiday shopping event. The recently renovated International Trade Building at the State Fairgrounds offers a new ambiance for your holiday shopping.   Mistletoe Market features over 100 vendors offering great holiday gift ideas for you, your friends and family. Featured items include men’s and women’s fashion, accessories, home décor items, children’s wear, toys, books, jewelry and more.  The more people walking through the doors with tickets, the more revenue Junior League has to invest in community programs.

Mayfair Village:  Several shops are having sales this weekend.  I have 2 recommendations.  Go by the Retro Depot and find some awesome vintage items for your house.  Then, walk over to one of my favorite stores, Blue 7.  Blue 7 has unique things including pieces by around 50 local designers/artists.  They have several things discounted to make room for their holiday shipments.  While you are there, make sure you register before November 1, to win a trip to Paris!  Plus, say hey to Reagan.  She rocks.

Shoe Gallery Anniversary Sale:  Have you been to this place yet?!  It’s in North Park.  They have so many shoes plus lots of other items too!!!  Right now you can get really great deals, and if you get an Oklahoman you can take in a coupon for an extra 20% off.  Go and get yourself some cute, slouchy boots.

Lime Leopard:  Since you will already be at North Park…Check out the Sales Room at Lime Leopard (up to 80% off everything from Tracey Reese to Trina Turk).   At www.thelimeleopard.com is offering 15% off of first purchase till 10/31, free shipping, no tax if you are out of state, and also all items in the sales room are available on the web.

Quail Spring Mall 25th Anniversary:  Oct 20-23.  Register each day from 1 to 2 pm in the Foley’s Court to win 1 of 4 $250 mall gift card prizes.  While you are there, check out all the special offers stores all of the mall are offering.

Foley’s Anniversary Sale: Oct 19-25.  Biggest Storewide Sale of the Month.  Go in and pick out a fitting, casual jacket, some gouchos, and if you didn’t get those boots at the Shoe Gallery, buy those too!  Use the following link to print off coupons for additional savings:  http://www.foleys.com/directmail/epromo_cp.jsp?divAbbr=FO&mEvtId=499&cEvtId=A9&cst=331516

Shopping Diva Report - Oct 14

Dana the Shopping Diva

October 14, 2005

I’ll start today with the Malls and end with some Special Events that everyone should attend (including me)!

Foley’s Red Apple Sale: Oct 14-15.  50% - 75% Off Storewide Clearance.  Everyone knows this sale because it’s been around forever.  It’s lasted because it’s a good one!

JC Penney Fall Shopping Spree: Oct 14 – 18th.  30% of reg prices & 10% off sale prices.  We talked about all the hidden treasures at Penney’s last week.  Same great things to buy but with a whole new sale!

Dillard’s October Sale and Values:  Big sale on shoes and boots!  My big reason to go to Dillard’s is to stop at the cosmetics counter (my fav one is at Penn Square).  Check out what I mean below.

Clinique Bonus Time:  Spend $21.50 and get tons of great bonus items!  Free make up is good.

Lancome- Eyes Wishes Granted:  Receive mascara and eye makeup remover with any 2 product purchase.  These sale dates vary by store location.  Foley’s 10/16 -10/23.  Dillard’s 10/23 - 10/29.

Old Navy - Save a Bundle on All Outerwear:  Oct 9 – 23.  They have coats for everyone with prices from $19.50 to $49.50.  I especially like the super cute dress coats for $39.50!

Kohl’s 2-Day Fall Sale:  Oct 14 – 15.  Special savings Fri 3pm to 11 pm and Sat 7 am to noon.  I’m going to check them out for some new jeans, as I seem to have out grown mine (grumble grumble), and maybe some suede boots.

Gordman’s 90th Anniversary Sale:  Big sales – plus, spend $90 and get a $20 gift card back.  I noticed in their ad that they have the slouchy, rouched purses that are very trendy right now for just $12.99.  They also have beaded slipper shoes like Kaci asked me about for just $8.99.  Diverting from clothes for a sec, they also have the stackable containers “as seen on tv” that I just got for $15 for just $9.99!  I highly recommend them by the way.  J

Ulta Lowest Prices of the Year:  I love this place!  Since I do make-up and fashion for photo shoots, I have to have great cosmetics at great prices.  They have tons of stuff on sale!   My fav item on sale is a ceramic flat iron for $39.99 that was originally $120.00 (perfect if your hair is a crazy as mine).  They also have an Eyelash Placement Kit from Japonesque (buy 2 of their items, get 1 free) that I’m interested in.

Eve’s 5th Anniversary:  Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th.  They claim to be the “trendiest store in Edmond,” and not many people seem to disagree with that statement.  It should be a good sale.

Ruth Meyers Saturday Surprise:  Take an additional 25% off  of a select showing of beaufiul gowns perfect for homecoming, dances and special occasions. They have beautiful things that are usually out of my price range, but I have them on my mind because one of the models from the contest I hosted last year, Edmond’s Top Model, was just in a show for them and in one of their ads!  Go Richelle.

Nancy’s - Carlisle Trunck Show:  Oct 10-17.  Nancy’s has quality clothes and you find them at NorthPark Mall.  I like that they carry Donald J Pliner shoes!  Join Carlisle in supporting the Komen Breast Caner Foundation.  In the past 5 years Carlisle has raised over $1,000,000 to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Tonight!

Parkway Men’s Clothing and Mark’s Shoe Room (men’s and women’s):  Parkway is hosting four trunk shows on Oct 14 & 15.  These are a lot of fun!  They have usually have giveaways with every purchase, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks. Friday 6:00pm to 9:00pm & Saturday 8:00am to 4:00pm.  The shows are 1.  Tallia mens made to measure 2.  Merrell mens and womens shoes 3.  Magnanni mens dress shoe 4.  RH Newell custom made shirts

Some incentives to come are:  Free Tie (up to $145.00 value) - With Every Tallia Custom Made Suit Purchase; Free Belt or Leather Tie Case - With Every Magnanni Shoe Purchase; Free Tallia Custom Made Pants – With Every Tallia Custom Made Sportcoat Purchase

The Girlie Show:  I went to this show last year and had a blast!  They had plenty of fresh designers featuring their stuff plus the whole place is wicked cute!  The mission of The Girlie Show is to give talented local and regional females an opportunity to show and sell their work in a fun party atmosphere. While the event is defined as an art show, they encourage the redefinition of art in its traditional senses.  The Girlie Show 2005 will be held Friday, October 14 at 8 p.m. This year’s show will be held in the historic (and newly remodeled!) Farmers Public Market building located at 311 S. Klein Avenue.  http://www.thegirlieshow.net

Cheap Tickets for a Cause:

My sister passed along this deal to me, so I’m giving it to you!  You can get $6 tickets for Fright Fest, Oct 21st.  It's a HUGE savings but you do have to order them ahead of time--they are not $6.00 at the gate.   Here is the electronic link to order Frontier City tickets for $6.00.  This is a fund raiser for Make Promises Happen Camp for persons with disabilities.
